Places of Interest in Bayonne, NJ

1. Bayonne is probably best know by its iconic bridge, the Bayonne Bridge. The Bayonne Bridge is in fact the 4th longest steel arch bridge in the entire world. In fact, it was the longest type of steel arched bridge for 45+ years until the New River Gorge Bridge was finished. The bridge is absolutely beautiful. It connect Bayonne with Staten, Island New York City.

Updates on the Raise The Bridge Project

As everyone in Bayonne and Staten Island are aware the Bayonne bridge needed some reengineering in order to raise the road so that large ships could pass under it. The project officially began in May of 2013 and is scheduled to be finished in 2017. With its completion the larger modern ships will be able to travel under it without any problem.

When the bridge is finally completed it will be 215 high from the water to the bottom of the road. On top of that the road will be modernized with 12-foot lanes and an include 12-foot shared lane for pedestrians and bicyclists. 2. Another place of interest is Shooters Island although it is closed to the general public. Shooters island is a 30+ acre that has been set aside as a bird sanctuary.
